Help not handouts...

Picture
This project seeks to give people practical assistance to help them get themselves out of poverty, rather than just giving them handouts.

Story: Banana Safaris

Alex is a hard working and faithful young man who is trying to provide school fees for his nephew who lives with him. He works as a life-guard at a swimming pool for which he earns little money, but he also has a small business providing tourist and leisure activities such as kayaking, fishing and boat trips. He came to us to ask for assistance with the school fees, but rather than giving him money, we built a website to attract more customers to the business. Story: The Pastor's Farm

Rev. David Mwesigwa is a busy man, not only pastor of a thriving church, but also Regional Overseer for over 100 churches in Uganda. He has a lot of people that he wants to help. He has some land, and rather than giving him money straight out, we made a loan to him to help him cultivate the land with a tractor.

In the picture you can just see Rev. David behind a woman from the village as they discuss the land for cultivation

To study well you need to sleep well

There are some practices in Ugandan schools that are detrimental to young people, although they are done in an effort to help them do well. One that has come to light is the lack of sleep children get. Children boarding at state primary schools are woken up at 4 a.m., or even 3, to prepare themselves to start classes at 6 a.m. They study all day and prep begins at 7 p.m. They are encouraged to work till 11 p.m. with the advice that they are 'at school to study not to sleep.' The consequences of the lack of sleep include stunted physical growth, obesity, diabetes and reduced concentration in class.

We are launching a programme called 'To study well you need to sleep well', aimed at educating young people, parents and teachers of the need to get a good night's sleep in order to do well at school and be healthy. We have produced literature and will be contacting schools in the Busoga region of Uganda.

Youth and Bible Conferences

One of the great needs in Uganda is for effective Christian teaching both to young people and church leaders. We send out two of our church leaders regularly to run youth conferences and Bible training conferences
